When balloons fly, and who can fly

Balloons in Dubai fly from late September to the end of May. In the summer months the ground heats too fast after sunrise and the air is too unstable, so flights stop.

Best months: November to March, when the pre-dawn desert is cool, the air is still and the light is clear. December and January give the sharpest visibility; October and April are warmer but often have the dramatic hazy sunrises.

What cancels a flight: wind above roughly 15 km/h at ground level, fog, rain, or the sand haze that follows a windy day. The pilot makes the call before the 4 am pickup, so cancellations are usually known before you leave the hotel. You are offered the next available morning or a full refund. To protect your flight, book it for the first or second morning of your stay so a rebooking still fits.

Who can fly: ages 5 to 80. Pregnant women are not permitted. The flight is not suitable for anyone with serious back, knee or heart conditions, recovering from surgery, or with a physical impairment, because everyone stands for the flight and braces for the landing. The operator also advises against it for people with a genuine fear of heights or flying.

What to wear: layers, since desert mornings in winter are 10 to 15 degrees before sunrise and warm by the time you land. Closed shoes, no heels, and a hat you can hold onto.
